The electronic structure of simple metal clusters is dominated by quantum size effects: the electronic density of states, which is continuous in the bulk, breaks up into a small number of highly degenerate states, the electron shells. Nevertheless even in the case of sodium, which is the best representative of a free electron metal, the residual electron-lattice interactions perturb this simple electron structure, which can be used to obtain information about the geometrical structure of the clusters from the measured density of states. Angle-resolved photoelectron spectroscopy goes one step further, as in principle it allows to determine the angular momenta of the observed electronic states. Results obtained on mass selected sodium clusters with 3 to 147 atoms are presented. Clearly different angular distributions are observed for electrons stemming from different shells, in agreement with simple single electron model calculations. The detailed comparison of experimental and model results shows, however, that strong multi-particle effects must play a role in the emission process, which constitute a challenge for theory.
